According to the Henley Passport Index, the Nigerian passport is rated 98th in terms of freedom of travel as citizens of Nigeria are capable of travelling to more than 20 countries all over the world without procuring a visa.

Nigerian citizens should go through visa requirements before traveling because some countries may have a visa policy that distinguishes them from other states, which travelers must provide. These prerequisites lie in the reason for your visit and the time duration you will spend in the country.

Electronic Travel Visa Authorization

It is an online system that allows Nigerian citizens to get an online visa waiver or an eVisa through online channels.

The essence of these programs is to accelerate the visa application process and make it easier for Nigerian citizens by not having to travel all the way just to visit an embassy or stand in long queues at border checkpoints to apply for a visa on arrival.

Presently, there are up to 20 countries that allow Nigerian citizens to obtain a single or multiple entries electronic travel visa authorization for a period of 90 days and for purposes such as tourist, business, or transit and the requirement necessary for obtaining an eVisa hugely depends on the destination of the country

 Still, It is essential to have a valid passport of between 3- 6 months and in certain cases, this document must possess within one or two blank pages that may be used to receive entry/exit stamps at the border.

You need to fill out an online visa application form with personal data, passport, and travel information before applying for an electronic travel visa authorization. Also, some countries sometimes request supporting documents like International Vaccination Certificate to be uploaded.

For some countries, you may be requested to pay what is called a processing fee using a credit/debit card before concluding and presenting the form for review

Once the application is approved, an electronic visa travel authorization will be sent through email and/or electronically connected to the passport.

Issuance of Visa on Arrival

As the name implies, it is a type of travel document assigned to Nigerian citizens through immigration officials at border checkpoints of the target country.

It is possible for Nigerian citizens to currently obtain a visa on arrival for up to 20 destination countries.

Embassy Visa 

It is a type of travel document given by the office of the government, either through an embassy or consulate of a target country.

Presently, there are over 180 countries that need Nigerian citizens to get an embassy visa before they are allowed to come into the country.

An embassy visa could be a work, student, tourist, transit business, or other visa option and can be issued as either a single or multiple entry travel document.

Also, the period of stay you are allowed to stay in the country depends on the reason for your visit and the country of destination.

For this type of visa application, Nigerian citizens should ask for an appointment at an embassy or consulate of their desired destination.

You are advised to make the appointment some weeks before traveling because in some cases, the government offices may take two or more weeks to approve and deliver the visa to the applicant.

Visa Not Required

Although there are some countries that Nigerian citizens cannot enter without an approved visa but do you know that there are about 20 countries that Nigerian citizens can travel to without having a visa for varying periods of permitted stay? 

As a Nigerian passport holder who wants to visit visa-free countries, you will be granted a visa-exempt stay of between 30 to 180 days but this depends on the target country, and most times the reasons for the visit are usually for tourists, business, or transit purposes.

In order to gain visa-free entrance to these countries, Nigerian nationals are expected to submit a legitimate passport as soon as they arrive at the border control. I t is also essential that a passport must contain within one or two blank pages that may be used to receive entry/exit stamps at the immigration checkpoints.
