These countries are followed by Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands.
The International Coffee Organization released its ranking of countries by coffee consumption per capita. The data was collected and analyzed to arrive at the rankings, which take into account the kilograms of coffee downed per person in a whole year. Now let’s look at these countries one after the other:
1. Finland: Consumes 12 kg per person per year
Finnish people consume a lot of coffee, with the average person consuming 24.45 pounds per year. This is likely due to the cold temperatures that much of the country experiences – coffee provides warmth and energy that helps people get through the day. For many Finnish workers, taking a coffee break is an important part of their day.
2. Norway: Consumes 10 kilograms per person per year
Although Norway's per capita coffee consumption is 21.82 pounds, only slightly less than Finland, coffee became popular in Norway much later than other European countries; in the 1800s. As was the case with many areas of the world, Norway underwent a period of prohibition during which alcohol was illegal. Consequently, citizens needed to find a new beverage to enjoy socially and coffee houses became the answer.
3. Iceland: Consumes 9 kilograms per person per year
The coffee culture in Iceland is strong and robust, with many people enjoying espressos, lattes, and cappuccinos. You can find small coffee shops and cafes on almost every street corner, and Icelanders claim that their coffee roasting methods are the best in the world. With 9 kilograms of coffee consumed per person each year, Iceland is one of the countries with the highest per capita coffee consumption.
4. Denmark: Consumes 8.7 kg per person per year
There is hardly any office or home in Denmark that does not have a good coffee machine. Coffee plays an integral role in every social gathering or professional meeting in Denmark. In Denmark, American coffee is the most popular: drinking this drink is a fundamental moment to socialize, as well as an opportunity to relax during work.
5. Netherlands: Consumes 8.4 kg per person per year
There is also a growing demand for the highest-quality varieties of coffee in the Netherlands. The Dutch enjoy 18.52 pounds of “koffie” per capita. Amsterdam’s coffee houses are not only known for serving up powerful brew, but also for serving up edible delicacies that are illegal in many other locations.
6. Sweden: Consumes 8.2 kg per person per year
Sweden has a strong coffee culture; many of its citizens consume eighteen pounds of coffee per capita. Coffee is typically drunk with pastries, and a few drops of milk are often added. The Swedish word for “to have coffee” is “fika,” and Swedes love to drink it at least twice a day to cope with the long, dark winters.
7. Switzerland: Consumes 7.9 kilograms per person per year
The Swiss consume around 1 kg more coffee than the Belgians do. Pods are the most popular variety in Switzerland. According to experts, a typical Swiss person consumes around 1100 cups of coffee per year. The most common varieties are Espresso and French Press. Coffee is expensive in Switzerland, with a cafe-served cup costing as much as $4.64 (USD).
8. Belgium: Consumes 6.8 kg per person per year
There is a growing appreciation for coffee in Belgium, especially for higher-quality beans and brewing methods. In fact, 79% of Belgians drink an average of 2 cups of coffee per day. Pod-based coffee machines are popular in Belgium, and the most commonly ordered drink is the classic Americano.
9. Luxembourg: Consumes 6.5 kg per person per year
Coffee-based drinks are very popular in Luxembourg. Sixty percent of the population drink 2 cups of coffee per day on average. There is a large number and variety of cafes and restaurants serving coffee across the city. Most people in Luxembourg prefer to finish off their meal with a good cup of coffee.

10. Canada: Consumes 6.2 kilograms per person per year
Canadians consume an average of 152 liters of coffee per year, making them one of the highest consumers of coffee per capita in the world. Canada is the only non-European nation in the top 10 list of coffee-consuming countries, with an average consumption of 6.5 kgs per person per year. Canadians typically enjoy a cup of coffee during breakfast to start their day. Drip coffee is the most popular type of coffee drink in Canada, followed by iced coffee.
11. Bosnia And Herzegovina – 6.2 Kgs Per Capita
The popularity of coffee in Bosnia can be traced back to the 14th century when the Muslim Ottoman empire expanded into the region. Under the Muslim regime alcohol was banned, so most Bosnians turned to coffee as an alternative. Even now, coffee is the most popular drink in Bosnia. Bosnians particularly love to brew their coffee using the Turkish method.
