Queen Elizabeth II, United Kingdom's longest-ruling monarch and the country's figurehead for several decades is dead. She died at age 96. This information was released on Thursday by Buckingham Palace.

Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952.

Following Queen Elizabeth's death, the eldest son Charles will lead the country in grieving the late queen as the new King and also as the head of state for 14 Commonwealth domains. Prince Charles was the former Prince of Wales.

In a statement on Thursday, Buckingham Palace said- “The Queen died a natural death at Balmoral this afternoon.

“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Report says Prince William, Her grandson, is also there, and Prince Harry, his brother, is on his way.

Her rule traversed 15 prime ministers beginning with Winston Churchill that was born in 1874 and now including Liz Truss, that was born in 1975 of which the Queen appointed earlier this week.

The late queen maintained weekly audiences with all her prime ministers throughout her rule.

Queen Elizabeth II was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, on 21 April 1926 in Mayfair, London.
