Atiku Postpones Port Harcourt Rally After Wike Celebrates Attacks on Sekibo and Other PDP Leaders

Pretential APC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has been forced to postpone his Port Harcourt rally, planned for last Saturday the 10th of November, due to residual tensions in Rivers State.

The state Governor and PDP leader, Nyesom Wike, recently celebrated the police raid on the residence of Chief Joab Sekibo, a senior PDP figure and strong Atiku supporter.

What Led To The Postponement?

The postponement appears to be in response to rising tensions between the PDP and the APC in Rivers State, triggered by the following events.

  • Wike reported Sekibo to the police – over an alleged “anti-party activity” – culminating in a police raid on his residence.

  • Wike praised the police – and accused some PDP leaders of being “unruly” – while also celebrating the raid on social media.

  • Atiku cancelled his rally – due to the current tensions in the state. This was subsequently described by Wike as a “wise decision”.

Wider Implications

The postponement could be viewed as a major blow to Atiku, whose campaign is heavily reliant on the support of PDP members. Coming so close to the general election, it may fuel further rumors that he is facing opposition from within the PDP itself.
