Gani Adams Tasks Peter Obi On Restructuring If Elected President
The prominent Yoruba leader, Chief Gani Adams, has issued a challenge to former Anambra governor and PDP Vice Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2019 presidential election. Chief Adams asserted that the nation needs restructuring in order to move forward, and challenged Peter Obi to use his influence to bring about this if he is voted in as the president.
Reasons for the restructuring:
- Democratic Balance: Adams asserted that the current federal model of governance in Nigeria does not provide enough balance. This has been exacerbated by the clashes between the federal government and certain state governments.
- Improved Economy: Adams noted that restructuring the country's economic systems would help to reduce a range of economic ills, such as inefficient resource allocation, rent-seeking behaviour, and a lack of economic diversification.
- Structural independence: Adams further highlighted that true independence can only be achieved by enabling the states to make their own decisions with regards to resources and security, without over reliance on the federal government.
Adams' Challenge to Peter Obi
Adams challenged Peter Obi to implement restructuring if elected President, as restructuring can only be achieved with decisive actions from the top. He suggested that Obi use his influence and potential presidential platform to push for reforms that would give states more autonomy and lead to the redistribution of resources from the centre to the states. Adams opined that this was the only viable way to move the nation forward and make it a truly independent nation.
Nigerian traditional leader and Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has challenged the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi, to prioritize restructuring if voted into office in the 2019 General Election.
As the campaign against incumbent president Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Obi of the PDP gains traction, Adams stated that Obi must focus on restructuring the country if voted into power. Expressing concern over the frail and delicate state of the nation, the Yoruba leader noted that restructuring is the only way out of any agony or discontentment currently being faced in the country.
In his words, “Until we get the country restructured, we cannot move forward because many things that were before were based on philosophies of sharing among the various regions, but now, all of that is completely extinct. All we hear now is the federal government giving pronouncements and states looking for funds from the federal government. That’s not how it should be.”
Adams further stated that the issue of local government autonomy must be looked into for the development of the grassroots in the country.
The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, however, appealed to the entire nation to shun violence and anger which in his view, has become the order of the day.
The 2019 General Election is just around the corner, and all eyes will be on Obi and his party as they have taken a clear stance in favor of restructuring. Let’s hope the restructuring takes place if Obi sails through.
